What causes brain fog and how do I fix it?

Brain fog, for many of us, was non-existent before 2020.

That’s not to say that it didn’t exist for others, though. It’s simply that the COVID-19 pandemic made brain fog a much more common experience.

According to the CDC, over 16 million people in the United States experience brain fog, or as it's also known, cognitive impairment.

And, thanks to the virus-heard-around-the-world, around 30% of those recovering from COVID experience brain fog. So, it’s safe to say this is a common issue that many people don’t know much about and are quite foggy about.

 Let’s change that.

 What is brain fog?

The first place to start is by defining the term. “Brain fog” simply refers to slow or lagged thinking.

However, a struggle with mental clarity isn’t the only thing you may feel with brain fog. People who suffer from brain fog may also find themselves experiencing some of the following symptoms:

  • Headaches
  • Mood swings
  • Depressed mood
  • Low physical energy
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Lack of motivation
  • And more

What causes brain fog?

Many different things can cause brain fog

  • COVID-19 recovery
  • Stress
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Illness
  • Medication side effects
  • Chemotherapy

For most mild cases, the feeling is temporary and eventually, mental clarity will return on its own.

But, if you’re ready to jump-start your return to a life without brain fog, here are some things you can do to help boost your mental clarity.

How to fix brain fog

One of the best ways to kick your brain fog to the curb is with the right supplements.

Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3s are great for all kinds of functions in the body, but when it comes to brain fog, they can be a great help in reducing inflammation. Studies have shown that inflammation in the brain is likely one of the leading causes of brain fog, so omega-3 supplements can help with that.

Our Mood Omegas were created to help support focus and cut brain fog, so you may want to reach for these to rid you of your foggy mind.

Magnesium

Researchers have found a direct link between low magnesium levels and brain fog. So, when that fog starts to kick in, it’s time to feed your body some magnesium.

You can opt for a magnesium supplement in capsule form, or to make it more fun and tasty, you can try our Mood Magnesium powder that comes in a tasty yuzu flavor.

Methylated B vitamins

B vitamins play a major role in thinking, memory, and other brain-related functions.

So, when your brain feels like it’s not functioning at its best, then adding B-complex vitamins to your daily regimen may be your ticket out of brain fog.

You want to ensure that the B vitamins you’re taking are methylated, meaning the active form that allows your body to use them right away.

Our Mood B vitamins are methylated and contain the 9 essential nutrients your brain needs to help optimize your mood and cut down on the brain fog.

Psychobiotics

If you’re looking to improve mental clarity, then you may want to jump on the hot new psychobiotic train.

Psychobiotics aren’t exactly new, but the term is gaining popularity. It simply refers to any kind of probiotic that is taken to support mental health as opposed to solely gut health.

Studies show that taking probiotics can help to improve mood, which plays a major role in mental clarity.

You want to find psychobiotics that contain the right strains that will help get your gut in a good place to improve your mood, and our Mood Biotics provide just that.

Here are the strains to keep your eyes out for:

L-theanine

If you’re looking for more science-backed solutions, we’ve got another one for you.

L-theanine is an adaptogenic herb that has been shown in studies to quicken the response time and cognitive ability of patients. With brain fog, this is exactly the clarity you’re looking for.

You can find L-theanine in our Mood Chews that were developed to help calm the mind of stress and anxiety while also helping with brain fog.
